My husband and I worked so hard to have children. We looked into fertility treatment. But we didn't feel that it was worth pumping me up with hormones and our chances were slim to none. So we decided on adoption. Two long years later, our dreams came true.
But the poor kid has been through a lot in his 4+ years of life. He has been to numerous doctor's appointments, including with a neurologist. We found out he had mild Cerebral Palsy. So we started him with physical therapy. Then we discovered he had severe speech apraxia, so he started speech therapy. Now we have learned he has some sensory processing disorder issues & ADHD. Things have been horrible lately. He has gotten mean, he's impulsive with what he says & does and doesn't pay attention to a darn thing. My husband & I both feel so alone in dealing with this. And of course, no one sees the boy we live with every day. Yesterday, while at his occupational therapy session, his therapist got a glimpse of that side. Hopefully with OT & dealing with a behavioral pediatrician, we can get things a little back to "normal."
Hi Krystil!! Way to go starting a blog. It will be good "therapy" for you.
ReplyDeleteI'm a retired special needs teacher, and I know of these challenges you face on a daily basis. You have that special young boy for a reason. Set your goals high, and never give up! And when you want to pull your hair out, I hope you can find your "Happy Place" and make a card or two. It's good for the soul!
Wow! glad to know a little more about you. What a wonderful couple you are to rescue a little boy who it sounds like really needs you. The challenges of parenthood are so rewarding - you just have to go through the challenges to get the rewards.
ReplyDeleteBless you for adopting this little treasure Krystil! Like Dixie said you have him for a reason. He needs you! Just love him :)
ReplyDeletePrayers, Krystil! Good job on starting the blog; I find it helps me relax and it's nice for the positive feedback, too. :) It's hard being a parent, whether your child is 'typical' or needs some help on issues. Good fo you in persevering to find out causes and seek treatment. BTDT, it's hard!
ReplyDeleteWe also have a behaviorist and speech therapist, and try to take things one day at a time (sometimes one minute at a time). I love my kids more than all the good things in this world and I there's nothing I wouldn't do for them, I know you feel the same way about your little man. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteBig hugs to you! My husband and I faced the same situations. After being married for 20 years, we decided to adopt. Our daughter came to us at 8-1/2 years old and since we loved the abuse (ha!) so much, we adopted our son, who was 7-1/2 when he came to live with us. That all started 11 years ago, so all I can tell you is hang on it's going to be a bumpy ride. Get a good therapist who knows about childhood neglect (I'm assuming that it is there). And watch the Dog Whisperer! Weird, I know, but learning to be a pack leader made a huge difference with me and my kids. They WILL try everything to get you to lose control. Staying calm is key. Keeping them calm and submissive, however, is not possible!
